About
While studying agriculture at University, I earned the name “Farm Fairy” (given to me as I climbed out of my pickup truck wearing an evening gown and boots). Several years later, I still like it. I like it not for the fact that it represents me (which it doesn’t, really, unless you count the planter full of chives on the patio of my 900-square-foot condo as a “farm”) but for the fact that it represents where I’d like to be. If I won the lottery tomorrow, you can bet I’d buy myself a little bit of land and be out there busily hobby-farming.
The fact that I’m several acres short of a hobby farm (Ha!) and live deep in the suburbia that is BC’s Lower Mainland doesn’t deter me from practicing up on my “skills”. My ever-patient husband, who in keeping with the “nicknames for where we’d like to be” theme we’ll call Mr. North Vancouver, endures many a project – be it craft or cuisine. Admittedly, he “endures” the cuisine projects much more easily than the craft. The fact that our goals for “locations we’d like to live” vary so much is a cause for discussion for us, but since the “farm” thing is currently prohibitively expensive, I’d imagine we’ll cross that threshold when we come to it.
In the end, I hope that my projects will benefit my son, whom we shall call “Little RuRu” since we really have no idea where he would like to end up since he can’t talk yet, and if they also benefit my lovely dog BoBo, I won’t complain. Even if I never make it as far as a hobby farm, I hope that RuRu will grow up to value good homemade food, appreciate the love that goes into handicrafts, and respect the land that produces our food.
